Westin Abha Breaks Ground As Aseer Advances Tourism Investment

Saudi Arabia has started construction on the Westin Abha project, a large tourism and hospitality development in the Aseer Region that will add new accommodation, event, retail and community facilities to the destination.

Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Aseer Region and Chairman of the Aseer Development Authority, laid the foundation stone for the project on 30 August. The scheme covers over 153,000 square metres and forms part of wider plans to grow Aseer’s visitor economy and attract further private sector investment.

Westin Abha will include 330 hotel units, 52 villas and chalets, and 78 residential units. The development will also feature gardens, restaurants, retail outlets, a pedestrian walkway, event spaces and community service facilities.

For the tourism, hospitality and visitor experience sectors, the project reflects Saudi Arabia’s continued focus on large-scale destination development supported by branded accommodation, leisure amenities and local workforce planning.

Mixed-Use Development With Visitor Economy Value

The scale and content of Westin Abha position it as a mixed-use resort project, rather than a single hotel development. By combining accommodation, serviced residences, villas, outdoor areas, dining, retail and event infrastructure, the scheme is designed to support multiple types of demand across tourism, business, community activity and longer-stay use.

This type of model is increasingly relevant across emerging destinations, where hospitality assets are being planned as anchors for wider visitor economy growth. Event spaces can support corporate functions, cultural activity and destination programming, while restaurants and retail outlets give the site additional commercial layers.

The inclusion of gardens and pedestrian routes also points to the importance of outdoor placemaking in resort design, particularly in regions looking to build distinctive visitor districts rather than isolated accommodation assets.

For developers, consultants and suppliers, the project may create opportunities across architecture, interior design, food and beverage planning, retail fit-out, event operations, guest technology, facilities management and destination marketing.

Investment Confidence And Regional Positioning

Speaking on behalf of investors and partners, Manarat Aldeyafah Company Chairman Saleh Alghamdi said the project is expected to be a significant addition to Aseer’s tourism and hospitality offer. He also pointed to the region’s capacity to attract investment linked to its growing destination profile.

Aseer has been gaining attention as Saudi Arabia seeks to broaden its tourism offer across different geographies, climates and cultural settings. Projects such as Westin Abha can support this by adding branded capacity and creating facilities that appeal to both domestic and international markets.

From a B2B perspective, the project demonstrates how major hospitality schemes can be used to build confidence in regional tourism markets. Branded projects often help validate demand, attract complementary development and give destination authorities tangible infrastructure around which to plan future campaigns and partnerships.

Workforce Development And University Partnership

Westin Abha is also expected to create over 1,000 direct, indirect, seasonal and training opportunities for local residents. This employment impact is a key part of the project’s value for the region, particularly as destination growth increases demand for trained staff across hospitality, tourism, media, engineering and operations.

A cooperation agreement has been signed with King Khalid University to train over 250 students in media, architecture, engineering, tourism and hospitality. The partnership is intended to prepare students for future roles linked to the development and support the growth of national talent.

For attraction and hospitality operators, this workforce element is significant. Large destination projects depend on local skills pipelines, particularly where service quality, operational consistency and guest experience standards are central to commercial success. As construction progresses, Westin Abha is likely to be watched by regional developers and international suppliers as another sign of Saudi Arabia’s expanding tourism investment pipeline
