Warsaw Museum Uses Spatial Audio To Recreate The Sound Of The 1920 Battlefield

The 1920 Battle of Warsaw Museum in Ossów, Poland, has completed a major immersive audio-visual installation designed to strengthen the interpretation of one of the country’s most significant military history narratives.

Located within the newly built Polish Army Museum pavilion, the installation uses technology from across Harman Professional’s portfolio, combining spatial audio, loudspeakers, amplification, processing, mixing, microphones and control systems. For museum operators, exhibition designers and AV integrators, the project provides a strong example of how spatial sound can be used to support historical storytelling, visitor movement and multi-purpose venue operation.

At the centre of the system is FLUX:: SPAT Revolution, a spatial audio platform used to position and move sound objects across exhibition areas. The technology allows battlefield elements such as aircraft, cavalry, explosions and troop movements to be placed within a three-dimensional sound field, helping the museum move beyond conventional audio playback.

Design Work Completed Before Site Deployment

Integrator ESS Audio selected FLUX:: SPAT Revolution early in the design process. This allowed the spatial mix to be developed and reviewed with the composer through binaural previews before installation began on site.

For project teams, this workflow is commercially and operationally important. Pre-production reduces the pressure on commissioning time, supports closer alignment between creative and technical teams, and allows sound concepts to be tested before equipment is installed. In museum projects with fixed opening schedules and complex build programmes, the ability to resolve creative decisions before final deployment can reduce risk.

ESS Audio has noted that the platform allowed most of the spatial sound design to be completed before the team arrived at the museum. This meant the final experience had already been shaped and agreed before technical commissioning, saving time and supporting a more predictable installation process.

Technical System Across Exhibition Spaces

The spatial system also addresses a common challenge in exhibition environments: ceiling-mounted loudspeakers. In areas where speakers are installed above visitors, SPAT Revolution is used to make sound objects appear to move through the visitor space, rather than being perceived as coming only from overhead. Its spatial processing and reverberation tools also allow the acoustic character of individual rooms to be altered.

The entrance hall uses two JBL CBT 1000 column loudspeakers, four CBT 70J loudspeakers with 70JE-1 extensions, ten AC16 compact loudspeakers and four Control SB2210 subwoofers. These are arranged in two half-ring configurations, with one ring using CBT models and the other distributing AC16 loudspeakers across four themed rooms.

The main exhibition hall includes 14 JBL Control HST loudspeakers, six CBT 70J-1 columns and four Control SB2210 subwoofers. JBL Control 25-1, Control 60PS/T and Crown DSi amplifiers power the loudspeaker systems, while BSS BLU-101 and BLU-160 processors manage routing, tuning and distribution with Dante integration.

Flexible AV For Live Programming

The museum also includes a multi-purpose performance space for lectures, presentations and cultural activity. This area features 14 JBL SRX906 line-array elements, four SRX915 subwoofers and additional JBL 9300 Cinema Surround Series loudspeakers. Soundcraft Si Series consoles support live mixing, alongside ten AKG microphones.

AMX NMX encoders and decoders, VARIA touch panels and TPControl provide system management across the exhibition and performance spaces. This gives museum teams central access to presets, routing and day-to-day operation.
