Universal Studios Begin Analysis of Potential Reopening Plans

The CEO of Universal Orlando Resort, John Sprouls, has outlined several different ideas on how the park may reopen safely when the COVID-19 pandemic finally draws to an end. As the number of cases in the US continues to rise, there is no set date planned for the reopening of the resort, with several factors to consider beforehand.

Universal is “thinking a lot about how and when to reopen” according to John Sprouls. There are “multiple teams working on a number of different scenarios. The paramount issue will be feeling safe in our park. If they [guests] don’t feel safe, they won’t attend.”

The new plans for reopening include having several social distancing measures put in place, on rides, in queues and through limiting the number of visitors allowed in the park each day. Virtual line technology is currently being used in Volcano Bay, Universal’s waterpark. The technology could be expanded to their theme parks, alongside the introduction of other technology creating an almost touchless guest experience and an overall more sanitary one.

It has also been mentioned that seating could be staggered on the rides when reopen, meaning there will be more space between guests, and fewer riders on board than normal. We have seen this measure put into practice already across China, as their attractions begin to reopen. Cleaning and disinfectant measures are also likely to be implemented.

Another measure that we have seen already in Chinese tourist attractions, that could be used by Universal, is temperature checks. Visitors could be checked prior to entry to the park, ensuring that they are below the desired temperature, with a view to avoiding high-risk people. Staff could be made to wear masks and other forms of PPE. Every team member that comes into contact with guests will be screened each day, according to John Sprouls.
