The Old Brewery To Open In Cardiff’s Brewery Quarter

Brains Brewery has partnered with Welsh pub company Breaking Brands and Heineken to create The Old Brewery, a new brewing and sport-led venue at Cardiff’s historic Brewery Quarter.

The venue will open on the former Ballie Ballerson site, within the original home of Brains Brewery on St Mary’s Street. Brains operated from the location between 1882 and 1999 before the site was later redeveloped into a leisure destination.

The opening date has yet to be announced, but the project signals a significant return for the Brains brand to one of Cardiff’s most recognisable leisure locations.

Heritage-Led Placemaking For Cardiff

The Old Brewery has been designed to connect Cardiff’s brewing history with a modern hospitality and entertainment format.

For operators, landlords and experience designers, the project demonstrates how local heritage can be used as a strong foundation for new leisure concepts. Rather than treating the historic setting as a backdrop, the venue will place the story of brewing at the centre of the experience.

The concept will draw on more than 140 years of Brains history, with art, archive material and brewery-related objects expected to support the venue’s narrative. This gives the project a clear sense of place and helps distinguish it from more generic competitive socialising formats.

Sport And Beer As Experience Drivers

The Old Brewery will combine brewing culture with interactive sporting games, creating a format that sits between hospitality, brand experience and leisure entertainment.

This approach reflects the continued growth of venues that pair food and drink with participatory activity. For destination operators, these formats can support longer dwell time, group bookings and repeat business, particularly in city centre locations with evening and weekend trade.

The sport-led element is also closely aligned with Cardiff’s identity as a major events city. By connecting brewing heritage with Wales’ sporting culture, the venue has the potential to appeal to both local audiences and visitors attending fixtures, concerts and city events.

Collaboration Between Brand And Operator

The project brings together Brains Brewery, Heineken and Breaking Brands director Steve Lewis. For the wider sector, this partnership model is notable because it combines brand heritage, brewing industry scale and local operating expertise.

Brains’ leadership has positioned the project as an opportunity to return to a site closely linked to the company’s history. Breaking Brands has framed the venue as a response to Cardiff’s need for a leisure space with history, energy and commercial purpose.

For B2B audiences, the development highlights the value of pairing a known local brand with an operator able to deliver an active, experience-led venue. It also shows how former leisure units can be reworked into concepts with stronger cultural relevance and local identity.

The Old Brewery is likely to be followed closely by operators working across visitor attractions, hospitality, brand experience and urban leisure. Its success will depend on how effectively it brings together storytelling, activity, product, service and setting within a single commercial format.

For Cardiff’s Brewery Quarter, the venue adds another layer to an area already shaped by food, drink and leisure. For Brains, it offers a high-profile return to its former home and a chance to present its heritage in a format built for today’s visitor economy.
