A themed camping space is being developed in Japan’s Uga Valley, set against a dramatic backdrop of dense forests, waterfalls, and mountain streams. The ultimate glamping experience, ‘Hygge Circles Ugakei’, based on Studio Ghibli’s work will be opening in Nagoya as soon as 2021.
The campsite, designed by the Japanese division of Danish outdoor equipment company Nordisk, is currently in its planning and development stage. Guests will eventually be able to stay in both tents and cabins, inspired by the work of Studio Ghibli. These include ‘Nordisk Tents’ and ‘Hygge Cabins.’ Other attractions within the site include the ‘Hygge Education Field’ and ‘Hygge Nature Field.’
The outdoor site will feature rows of dimly lit cottages, with bonfires situated between the various rivers and trees. A key element of Nordisk’s projects is environmental sustainability, and ‘Hygge’, which is a Danish term for cosiness, comfort, and wellbeing. The Hygge Circles Ugakei campground is situated around a 50-minute train journey from Nagoya.

This latest development from Studio Ghibli follows the news earlier this year of their theme park project. The Studio Ghibli theme park had been in the works for some time, before picking up pace earlier in the year, with design pictures released by the studio. The visual gems inside the park honour some of the most successful productions by Ghibli, such as Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and many more.
Studio Ghibli is well known for its extraordinarily original and nuanced art films, and the park is set to continue this legacy, becoming a marvel of the world of animation and tourism.
The park, boasting five themed lands and themed dining areas, is set to open to the public in 2022 in Aichi Prefecture. Ghibli’s Giant Warehouse, Dondoko Forest, and Springtime of Life Hill will open with the park in 2022, although Princess Mononoke Village and Witch Valley will debut the following year.
