Shenzhen Natural History Museum Opens As Southern China’s Largest Natural History Venue

Shenzhen Natural History Museum has officially opened in the city’s Pingshan District, giving southern China a major new venue for science, ecology and public learning.

The 100,000 sq m museum has been designed by 3XN, B H Architects and Zhubo Design, following an international competition win in 2020. Located beside Yanzi Lake, the building has been planned as a major cultural destination for Shenzhen and a significant addition to China’s museum infrastructure.

For organisations working in museums, visitor attractions, cultural planning and exhibition design, the project offers a large-scale example of how architecture, public space and interpretation can be aligned around a single institutional purpose. The museum is not treated solely as a container for collections. Its form, circulation and material choices are central to how the subject matter is communicated.

The building’s sweeping profile rises from the ground through a sloping roof and terraced routes. This creates direct public access from ground level and supports use beyond the galleries, allowing the site to function as both a museum and a civic space.

Architecture Inspired By Natural Systems

The design team has shaped the museum around natural references connected to rivers, hills, geology and water. Its exterior is wrapped in strips of granite, with openings that appear carved into the surface. The result is a highly sculptural building that avoids conventional rectilinear museum planning.

3XN founder Kim Herforth Nielsen has described the concept as one rooted in natural formation, with the building intended to feel shaped by geology, water and time. In practical terms, this gives the museum a strong identity and a clear relationship with its scientific purpose.

For destination developers and cultural operators, this architectural approach is notable because it strengthens the connection between building and content. Natural history museums often rely on collections, specimens and displays to explain Earth systems. In Shenzhen, the visitor route itself has been designed to support that message, moving through terrain-like spaces, light-filled voids and enclosed passages.

Gallery Planning And Exhibition Design

Internally, the museum is organised across five cone-shaped volumes, linked by cave-like corridors and atriums. The galleries focus on natural history, Shenzhen’s ecology and the wider region’s environmental context.

Exhibition design has been developed with Atelier Brückner and Museum Studio. Although gallery photography has not yet been released, the spaces have been described as media-rich environments, combining specimens with large-scale installations and digital interpretation.

This approach reflects a broader shift in science and natural history venues towards spatial storytelling, sensory engagement and layered content. For exhibition designers, AV suppliers and museum planners, the project shows how physical specimens can sit within larger narrative settings, supported by media, scale and architectural movement.

The museum’s director, Nan Zhaoxu, has said the venue connects collections and research covering 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history with a building that makes the scientific narrative physically legible. The design also places Shenzhen’s local geography within a wider ecological frame.
