Seven things to expect as New York’s Guggenheim Museum reopens

After a lengthy seven-month closure, a popular US art museum will be reopening its doors on October 3.

The Guggenheim Museum has remained closed since March, however under new New York state guidelines and with the necessary safety measures in place the institution believes it’s the right time to welcome back guests to the 80-year-old museum.

What to expect

1. Face masks: All adults and children above the age of two will always be required to wear face mask or covering during the visit.

2. Reduced visitor numbers: To ensure social distancing can be adhered to, the Guggenheim Museum is operating at just 25 per cent capacity – there has never been a better time to get up close to exhibits.

3. One-way systems: The museum has implemented a one-way system to navigate around the collections. The museum urges guests to maintain a two-metre (two arm’s length) distance from separate visiting parties.

4. Hand sanitising stations: Visitors are required to hand-sanitise upon arrival and encouraged to use the sanitising points dotted around the museum.

5. Extra cleaning: Visitors will likely see highly touched surfaces being cleaned throughout the visit.

6. Travel light: The museums cloak room isn’t reopening just yet.

7. Book online: Tickets need to be purchased online prior to arrival, with each visiting party receiving an allocated time slot for their visit.

US museums have suffered the hardest through COVID-19, with American Alliance of Museums (AAM) predicting museums across the states to have lost as much as $33 million a day during the height of the pandemic.

We’re glad to see The Guggenheim and other museums across the US reopening and hopefully getting back on their feet!

In other art museum news, the Brooklyn Museum hopes to raise $3 million by auctioning 12 works of art.
