Natural History Museum to star in prime-time TV series in January 2021

A leading UK museum will star in a prime-time TV series, which will immerse viewers behind the scenes of operating one of the most popular visitor experiences in the world.

Commencing January 7, Natural History Museum: World of Wonder will air weekly at 8pm on Channel 5 and will be available on demand service for viewers unable to watch the live showing.

The insightful series will delve into the ground-breaking research of Natural History Museum’s 300 world-class scientists, with camera crews documenting their captivating discoveries, along with exploring how the Museum’s curators expertly create its bespoke exhibition galleries.

Filmed over several months in 2020, viewers will be treated to never-seen-before parts of the museum’s most treasured areas, including its labs and scanning suites, ultra-spacious collection storages and dissection rooms.

The Museum’s Principal Curator of Mammals Richard Sabin is set to taking a starring role in the series. Through his appointment, Sabin has worked with Hope, the legendary blue whale skeleton which acts as the museum’s centrepiece in the iconic Hintze Hall.

While tuning into the weekly programmes, viewers will be treated to new research conducted by Sabin which reveals ground-breaking information of Hope’s life from more than 130 years ago.

Award-winning TV company The Garden Productions has been engaged to create the series, which was commissioned by Lucy Willis of Channel 5.

Commenting ahead of the first showing, Lucy said: “In this series we go behind the doors of one of the greatest museums in the world. Every year, over 5 million visitors come to see its incredible collection: from extraordinary dinosaurs to giant whales, rare fossils to space rocks as old as the solar system itself, all looked after by its passionate staff.

Adding: “But visitors see only a fraction of the staggering 80 million items in the collection. Now our cameras have been allowed not just front of house but behind the scenes too, to capture the incredible specimens and reveal the unique and rare pieces too valuable to exhibit.”
