Marilyn Jackson Assumes Leadership as President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums

In a significant stride toward diversity in leadership, Marilyn Jackson has been appointed the next President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) following an extensive national quest. Currently holding the role of President and CEO at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky, Marilyn brings strategic nonprofit expertise and a genuine commitment to education, making her the first Black woman and person of color to lead AAM. She officially assumes her position on April 22, 2024.

During her tenure at the Muhammad Ali Center, Marilyn achieved notable milestones. The organization introduced a new strategic plan, exceeded revenue targets, and revamped its website, establishing it as a premier digital platform for delving into the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali. Marilyn was pivotal in founding the Center for Humanity and Justice, a core hub for impactful programs, including curriculum development, youth leadership initiatives, and Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) training.

Recognizing her accomplishments, Marilyn received the esteemed 2023 Most Admired CEOs award from the Louisville Business Journal. Before her role at the Ali Center, she served as the Chief Strategy & Engagement Officer at the United Way of Metro Chicago, overseeing a $55 million organization committed to community advancement.

Marilyn’s extensive cultural sector experience spans roles such as Director of Marketing at the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago, VP of Marketing and Membership at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, and Manager of Strategic Planning and Special Initiatives at Six Flags theme parks. She serves on the Board of the Trotter Project, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing food security.

Marilyn steps into the shoes of Laura Lott as President and CEO, and the AAM Board of Directors extends appreciation to Brooke Leonard for her dedicated interim leadership. The museum community eagerly awaits Marilyn’s formal introduction at the 2024 AAM Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo in Baltimore this May.
