Japan’s Noto Satoyama Airport To Relaunch With Pokémon-Themed Visitor Experience

Ishikawa Prefecture’s Noto Satoyama Airport is ready for reopening as Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport on 7 July, introducing a long-term Pokémon-themed experience as part of renovation work linked to the region’s post-earthquake recovery.

The regional airport, which operates flights between the Tokyo Haneda International Airport and Noto Peninsula, will feature themed attractions and events until 30 September 2029. While its flight network is limited, the new positioning gives the airport a broader role as a destination asset, using one of Japan’s most recognisable cultural exports to support visibility, tourism and regional engagement.

For transport operators, destination marketers and experience designers, the project offers a clear example of how functional infrastructure can be reimagined through licensed IP, environmental graphics, retail and food and beverage programming.

A Four-Storey Themed Terminal

The renovated four-storey terminal will feature 111 flying-type Pokémon characters across its redesigned spaces. The selection links the IP directly to aviation, with bird, insect and dragon-inspired characters used to support a consistent narrative across the airport journey.

A central atrium installation will feature Pikachu positioned on an aircraft, surrounded by flying Pokémon. This type of large-scale focal point can play an important role in wayfinding, arrival impact and visitor photography, particularly in transport environments where dwell time varies.

The airport will also use themed artwork across pillars, walls and information signposts. By extending the concept across both exterior and interior touchpoints, the project aims to create continuity from arrival through to departure. For brand experience teams, this demonstrates the value of applying a themed identity across multiple operational zones rather than limiting activity to a single display area.

Recovery, Hope And Regional Storytelling

The airport’s redesign has been developed in response to the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, which caused severe damage across the region. Beyond its tourism function, the project has been positioned as a way to bring comfort and optimism to communities affected by the disaster, particularly children and families.

One of the main artworks, titled A Bright Future, will be located in the arrivals lobby. It draws on imagery of flying Pokémon, light and rainbows to communicate ideas of travel, recovery and new beginnings, while also referencing Noto’s natural setting.

This gives the project a deeper civic purpose. Rather than treating IP as surface decoration, the airport is using familiar characters to support regional storytelling and emotional recovery. For cultural and public-space planners, this is an important distinction. Character-led design can carry local meaning when it is tied to context, timing and community needs.

Commercial Programming And Visitor Value

The experience also includes themed food and beverage and limited-edition merchandise. Pancakes and speciality drinks will be served with custom-designed placemats, while souvenirs will include suitcases, luggage tags, keychains and T-shirts with new branding and commissioned artwork.

These elements give the airport additional revenue opportunities while supporting the wider visitor journey. Merchandise connected to a specific location can also increase the perceived value of the experience, particularly when linked to a time-limited project and regional recovery story.

For airports, retail destinations and attraction operators, Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport highlights how IP partnerships can support place branding, public engagement and ancillary spend. It also shows how smaller transport sites can use strong creative partnerships to gain international attention, even when their core transport function remains regional.
