Lumsden Design celebrates the opening of its latest retail project in Richmond Upon Thames.
In a collaborative project with acclaimed interior designer Mizzi Studio, Lumsden has revealed the results of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’s Family Kitchen Shop.
The retail space, brought to life by Lumsden, immerses guests into the stories of nature from the get-go. Plenty of stand-outs are on offer throughout the shopping venue, including display tables which resemble oversize ants, an oversize earthworm bench to entice little bookworms and cloud shaped lights.
The 208 square metre retail space has been designed with protecting the environment at its core, featuring sculptural mushroom shaped tables which have been created using the wood from trees felled at the Kew Gardens site. The cash wrap countertop has also been made from recycled yoghurt pots.
Commenting on Lumsden’s task, Patrick Wynniatt-Husey, Project Manager at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew said:
“We asked the team at Lumsden Design to create a retail offer that would appeal to visitors of all ages, enhancing their enjoyment of the new and hugely popular Children’s Garden.
“Despite the challenges of lockdown and a limited budget they have worked in close collaboration with our other partners to deliver an extraordinary, engaging and cohesive design solution. In short, I believe this is now the best shop at Kew!”

Meanwhile, the interiors are also very much a feast for the eyes, transporting families into a fantastical world of gardens, forests and woodlands. Meticulously designed by Mizzi Studio, the interior cleverly makes humans feel as though they have shrunk to the same size of small creatures, to create a Charlie and the Chocolate meets nature environment.
The 250 cover restaurant, also delivered by Mizzi Studio, features a radiating LED sun as its centrepiece. Other focal points include Gaudi inspired blue mosaic wave seats, to connote the parting seas and pendant rain cloud lighting.
Lumsden and Mizzi worked closely with HOK’s London Studio, CityAxis and Mulroy Architects to build an F&B and retail space which stimulates, educates and engages guests of all ages.
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’s Family Kitchen Shop opened to the public late last year (December 6, 2021).
