Attractions around the world are feeling the pinch of the pandemic, with a Hong Kong theme park reducing employee salaries to cope.
From today (October 1) Ocean Park will cut all its workforce salaries by five to 15 per cent and cancel unpaid leave for all staff members.
The cost-saving measures were approved by the theme park’s board of directors and will remain in place until reviewed again this December.
The park, which is the second biggest theme park in Hong Kong, has been struggling long before COVID 19 hit operations. In the 2019 financial year the park reported a four-year deficit exceeding £55 million.
However a forced closure and significantly reduced capacity proved to be the last straw for Ocean Park and in May, the government approved a £500 million bailout for the 92 hectare attraction.
Ocean Park recently reopened for the second time on September 18.
COVID-19 isn’t just impacting Hong Kong attractions, with the pandemic also forcing a popular laser tag centre in San Diego to permanently close.
