Hong Kong Maritime Museum

Haley Sharpe Design has been awarded the interpretative planning and exhibit design contract for the redevelopment of Hong Kong’s Maritime Museum.

Working in a team led by P&T Architects of Hong Kong, the two companies are enjoying a repeat of the successful partnership responsible for a major Dubai museum development.

The HK$110 million redevelopment project will see the existing museum relocated from its current location in Stanley Bay, to a refurbished pier building on the waterfront at Pier 8 Hong Kong Harbour.

The project, which is scheduled to complete in October 2012, is currently at Schematic Design stage, with HSD’s conceptual approach receiving client approval last month. Hong Kong and China’s maritime history will be communicated in engaging spaces with the use of mixed media including, AV, IT, reconstructions, display cases and physical interactives.

“This is our most prominent project in this part of world, and is developing well with very talented and enthusiastic Client and Architectural teams” says Kevin Callis, HSD Senior Project Manager. “It’s an exciting collection, and the new location provides some very usable and unique gallery spaces thanks to the creative architectural treatment of the existing building”.

The current museum was established in 2004 and funding has been arranged through the Hong Kong Government. P&T Architects and Haley Sharpe were awarded the contract following international tender.
