Haley Sharpe Design and Marcon celebrate the launch of HMS Victory: The Nation’s Flagship

Haley Sharpe Design (hsd) and Marcon are celebrating the launch of HMS Victory: The Nation’s Flagship at the recently opened of the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

Hsd’s brief was to create an experience which revealed the legendary ship’s rich history from ‘acorn to icon’. By navigating throughout the gallery, guests will be immersed into key historical moments for the ship, including the laying of her keel and the continued conservation efforts to preserve HMS Victory.

The team has kitted out the experience with plenty of historical artefacts, illustration, immersive media and soundscapes to name a few – which have created a fresh contemporary era of experience storytelling.

To encourage family learning and to connect with younger audiences, tactile displays, 3D models and guest dress-up opportunities are also on offer.

At the start of the gallery, guests will enjoy The Remarkable Survivor. Setting the scene for guests, they will explore HMS Victory’s amazing career, live action recreations onboard the ship and original archive imagery & footage. The spectacular showpiece film was created in partnership with media specialist ISO.

The below-ship walkway

Another first for the project is interpretation on the new below-ship walkway. Commented on the walkway, Deevyash Vadher, said: “One of the most amazing aspects of this project was to create a series of interpretative graphics that are placed on the new walkway that allows the visitor to view under the ship, and for the first time in history people will be able to get up close to parts of the ship that have been hidden away for years.”

Working alongside hsd, Marcon completed the fit-out of the gallery – which included the manufacture and instillation of bespoke joinery setworks and object mounts. The team at Marcon also co-ordinated the specialist subcontractors responsible for the graphics, display cases and interactives.

HMS Victory: The Nation’s Flagship was unveiled this week (May 17) at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
