Haagen-Dazs Floating Cinema Launched in Paris

A floating movie theatre sponsored by Haagen-Dazs has been launched in Paris. The innovative new attraction allows guests to watch ‘Le Grand Bain’, from the comfort of their own boat, taking social distancing to a whole new level. The cinema has been set up on the river Seine at the Bassin de la Villette.

The cinema contains a fleet of 38 boats, which each sit between four and six people. Groups must be made up of members of the same household, to ensure social distancing measures are respected. A further 150 deckchairs were available on the beach area for guests to watch the screening, on a 16 metre by 9-metre screen.

‘Cinema sur L’Eau’, which translates as ‘Cinema on the water’ launched on July 18, where guests were also treated to a performance from the Paris Chamber Orchestra. The event was part of Paris’ ‘A Special Summer’ campaign, which runs until September 15, and includes artistic and cultural events throughout the city. In addition to the performance from the Orchestra, guests were treated to a special screening of ‘A Corona Story’, a short film.

The cinema has been developed by MK2. MK2 Cinemas CEO, Elisha Karmitz said that the project was a great opportunity to show the people of Paris that they can still enjoy trips to the cinema. “After the few months of confinement, we thought we needed a way to tell the people and tell the world that cinemas are open in Paris, and that Paris is the worldwide capital of cinema.”

One attendee, Luc Bouvier said “I already went back to the cinema once, wearing a mask, but I have to admit there is still some apprehension to go back to the cinema. But here, since it is an open-air screening, there are less doubts, we feel safer.”
