English Heritage delighted with Carlisle Castle reopening success

As the UK government continues to lift COVID-19 restrictions, most British attractions have started to reopen under a ‘new normal’.

To adhere to government guidelines, visitor attractions have put a number of safety measures in place for both guests and staff members. Some of these include mandatory wear of face masks, one-way systems, hand-sanitising points and decreased capacity.

While most guidelines seem pretty feasible, having to significantly reduce visitor numbers is having detrimental effects on the attraction sector, with most visitor experiences relying heavily on admission sales.

However, one British attraction which isn’t struggling amid the pandemic is Carlisle Castle, which has been overwhelmed with visitors since reopening July 4. To control numbers at the visitor experience, guests need to be booked online, with most slots selling out during the summer period.

English Heritage has reported that the 900-year-old castle is one of their busiest attractions in the North. This has led to more staff being brought back to work at the Heritage site.

Officials at English Heritage believe the secret of Carlisle Castle’s success is due to the work done by the Discover Carlisle Team at Carlisle City Council. The team put together a video campaign to showcase the new implementations Carlisle Castle has in place to keep guests safe while visiting the Cumbrian attraction. The video has been reached by more than 125 thousand people who maybe seeking reassurance during these troubling times.

Commenting on Carlisle Castle’s reopening success, James Fell, Marketing Manager, English Heritage said: “We are really pleased with the work done to promote Carlisle as a destination and would like to thank the City Council for their leadership and hard work during the reopening process.

“This is a challenging time for the tourism sector and as a charity we rely on members and visitors as well as local organisations like the council, for support. So, it has been it has been heart-warming to see so many of our members and visitors coming back to Carlisle Castle since we re-opened in July.”

Carlisle Castle is open from 10am to 5pm daily.  Admission also includes the Cumbria Museum of Military Life. Tickets can be purchased here.
