Disneyland are set to delay the debut of the new Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction due to COVID-19.
A 2022 launch date was previously announced in April 2019, however the attraction is now set to be completed and ready for visitors in 2023. Unlike other Disney theme parks, Disney California has remained close as they await the go ahead to reopen with guidelines from the state government.
The Californian park has now been closed for five months because of the pandemic. While construction for the Runaway Railway is still happening, the process is a lot slower with less workers being allowed on the site.
Walt Disney Imagineers and Disneyland president Ken Potrock visited Disney California on September 1, to oversee the construction of the Runaway Railway’s first vertical beam.
The runaway train is the first Disney ride dedicated to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The attraction embarks guests on a multi-sensory cartoon experience, boarding a troublesome train journey which encounters hurricanes, waterfalls and unruly animals.
The Californian ride is the second of its kind. An identical Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway was launched in Disneyworld’s Hollywood Studios in March 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic forced all Orlando parks to close.
Elsewhere, there are plans to increase the capacity of Orlando theme parks to help Florida economy.
