A major new immersive theatrical production in Wuhan, China, is setting a benchmark for integrating digital technology into cultural storytelling. The “Ballad of Chu”, hosted at Mulan Everbright Town in Hubei province, brings Jingchu culture to life through a multi-layered experience powered by more than 50 Christie 1DLP laser projectors.
As the first indoor attraction dedicated to Jingchu heritage, the production combines historical themes with high-spec projection to create a fully immersive visitor environment across a 14,000 sq m, three-storey venue. This project demonstrates how advanced AV solutions are being deployed for visual spectacle and to support authentic interpretation of regional histories and traditions.
Multi-Zone Design with Immersive Technical Execution
The attraction spans three floors, each hosting a different experience segment. The top floor theatre has 360-degree rotating seating and 36 Christie laser projectors, creating a four-sided performance space that envelops visitors in every scene.
Using six Captiva DWU500S projectors and custom electric gauze screens, the “Zhaojun Goes to the Frontier” installation delivers a fluid and ethereal visual treatment aligned with the narrative’s more poetic tone on the second floor. Meanwhile, the ground-floor “Battle of Red Cliffs” experience uses three DWU860-iS projectors to generate dynamic floor and wall visuals that place guests at the centre of a large-scale battle scenario.
The site design and projection systems were delivered in collaboration with Jianye Display, which handled all aspects of installation and integration. Their use of Christie’s projection suite has enabled complex effects such as seamless edge blending, interactive projection mapping, and multi-angle visual layering—all critical in maintaining immersion across such varied content and performance formats.

By embedding projection into the very structure of the performances, the “Ballad of Chu” positions digital AV as a core component of cultural storytelling rather than a supplementary element.
