Bringing History and Stories to Life Through Augmented Reality at The Big Malarkey Festival

HelloU Creative’s StoryCoin™ Augmented Reality Trail Brings Storytelling to Life at The Big Malarkey Literature Festival

Experience UK member HelloU Creative has successfully delivered its StoryCoin™ Augmented Reality Trail at The Big Malarkey Festival, demonstrating how immersive technology can bring together storytelling, heritage, education and real-world exploration.

The experience formed part of The Big Malarkey Festival in Hull’s East Park, a celebration of children’s literature, storytelling, creativity and imagination bringing together families, authors, performers, artists, educators and creatives.

For HelloU Creative, the festival provided an opportunity to demonstrate how augmented reality and interactive storytelling can encourage families and young people to engage with stories in new and memorable ways.

Bringing Physical and Digital Storytelling Together

At the heart of the activation was StoryCoin™, HelloU Creative’s approach to connecting physical places, objects and experiences with digital storytelling.

Through the StoryCoin™ Magical Mystery Star Trail, families used their mobile phones to explore the festival, unlock digital content and discover stories connected to inspiring historical figures.

The augmented reality trail encouraged participants to move through the physical environment while uncovering digital experiences along the way, creating a playful connection between technology, storytelling and place.

Participants who completed the trail also received a special 3D printed gift to celebrate their journey.

The activation was a huge success and provided HelloU Creative with an opportunity to showcase how immersive technology can create experiences that encourage curiosity, exploration, learning and connection.

Bringing Heritage to Life Through Augmented Reality

One of the ambitions behind StoryCoin™ is to make heritage and historical stories more accessible to contemporary audiences, particularly children and young people accustomed to gaming, interactive media and digital experiences.

Rather than presenting historical figures simply as names, dates or images, StoryCoin™ uses creative technology to help audiences discover the people behind the stories — their ideas, achievements, challenges and connections to real places.

The Magical Mystery Star Trail included Mary Wollstonecraft, the influential writer, philosopher and advocate for women’s rights and education.

As part of developing the experience, HelloU Creative worked with Emma Waslin, Programme Development Manager at the Wollstonecraft Society, to explore Wollstonecraft’s connections with Yorkshire.

Although widely associated with London, Wollstonecraft spent part of her younger life in Yorkshire during the 1770s and lived at 2 Highgate in Beverley, close to Beverley Minster.

Including these connections within the experience helped demonstrate how immersive storytelling can reveal the history that exists within communities and connect globally significant stories with local places.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The project also complemented the work of the Wollstonecraft Society, which uses the life and work of Mary Wollstonecraft to inspire and educate children and young people about human rights.

With support from Two Ridings Community Foundation, the Society has been delivering Start Somewhere… in Hull, a year-long creative human rights programme supporting young people aged 14–17.

For HelloU Creative, collaborations and experiences such as these demonstrate the potential for augmented reality to go beyond entertainment and become a tool for education, cultural engagement, placemaking and community storytelling.

Exploring the Future of Immersive Storytelling

The successful StoryCoin™ activation at The Big Malarkey Festival highlighted how digital layers can enhance physical environments without replacing the traditional forms of storytelling at their heart.

From cultural attractions and heritage destinations to festivals, education and place-based experiences, the technology creates opportunities for organisations to transform locations and objects into interactive storytelling platforms.

For HelloU Creative, StoryCoin™ represents an ongoing exploration of how augmented reality, creativity and storytelling can work together to create meaningful experiences that connect people, stories and places.

The Big Malarkey Festival provided a fantastic setting to demonstrate that potential — and to see families actively exploring and engaging with the experience.

If you would like to create a similar experience that brings historic figures, heritage stories and local places to life, HelloU Creative can help you explore how StoryCoin™ and augmented reality could transform your stories into engaging, interactive experiences for audiences of all ages.
