Bringing Heritage Spaces To Life Through Immersive Projection And Live Performance

At LUMINISCENCE, we continue to explore how immersive technology and live performance can reinterpret historic environments for contemporary audiences. Following successful international presentations and a recent UK debut in Manchester, we are preparing to bring our 360-degree projection-mapped concert experience to Westminster Cathedral in London for a limited summer run.

This next phase represents a significant step in our UK expansion, placing the experience within one of the country’s most architecturally distinctive landmarks. For us, the project demonstrates how heritage venues can be reimagined through carefully integrated digital and performance-led interventions.

Integrating Storytelling, Music And Projection Mapping

The London production combines large-scale projection mapping with live choral performance and narrative storytelling. Working with Lux Aeterna choir, the programme draws on a repertoire of classical composers, presented within a spatial audio environment designed to complement the cathedral’s acoustics.

Narrative structure plays a central role in the experience. A specially commissioned script, voiced by actor Hugh Bonneville, traces the evolution of London, linking the city’s history with the architectural and cultural significance of the cathedral itself.

For us, this integration of sound, light, and narrative allows the space to function as both a performance venue and a storytelling medium. The building becomes an active participant in the experience rather than a static backdrop.

Site-Specific Design And Digital Reconstruction

Each LUMINISCENCE project is developed in response to its host venue, and Westminster Cathedral presents a unique opportunity for site-specific design. The interior will be fully mapped and modelled in advance, forming the basis for a projection system that responds precisely to the building’s geometry.

A key feature of the London production is the digital realisation of architectural elements that were never completed. Using historical research and digital modelling, we have recreated the cathedral’s intended mosaic domes, allowing audiences to experience a version of the space that has not previously existed.

This approach reflects our wider methodology, where technology is used not only to enhance existing features but also to interpret and extend architectural narratives.

Technical Delivery And Operational Planning

Delivering a project of this scale requires detailed preparation. In the months leading up to opening, our technical teams conduct comprehensive 3D mapping of the venue, ensuring that projection, lighting, and audio systems are fully aligned with the structure.

The integration of spatial sound and projection mapping is designed to operate as a cohesive system, supporting both the visual and acoustic dimensions of the experience. For operators and partners, this highlights the importance of early-stage planning and precision in delivering immersive environments within complex heritage settings.

Supporting Heritage Through Experience

Alongside its creative objectives, the project also contributes to the ongoing preservation of Westminster Cathedral. A portion of ticket revenue is allocated to the maintenance of the building, aligning the experience with long-term conservation goals.

This model reflects an increasing alignment between cultural programming and heritage funding, where immersive experiences can support both engagement and preservation.

Continuing International Growth

The Westminster Cathedral residency forms part of our ongoing international rollout, building on established presentations across Europe and the United States. Each new location allows us to refine our approach while adapting to the specific characteristics of the venue.

For the visitor experience sector, projects such as this demonstrate how immersive formats can activate historic sites, combining technology, performance, and storytelling to create new forms of engagement. As we continue to expand, our focus remains on delivering experiences that respect the integrity of each location while introducing new ways to interpret and experience it.
