ATS Heritage has shared their successes of one of their latest projects, an audio-tour of one of Britain’s most legendary ships.
Located on the cusp of Central London in Greenwich, the iconic Cutty Sark welcomes visitors to explore the decks of the world’s last surviving tea clipper, which played a prominent role in Britain’s trading industry through the Victorian era.
Cutty Sark might have been a tourist attraction for almost 70 years, but Royal Museums Greenwich, who look after the historical centrepiece, are always on the hunt for enhancing the overall guest experience, to drive revenue and showcase the nation’s rich history using the latest technology.
Collaborating with ATS Heritage
ATS Heritage was thereby engaged to develop an extensive audio tour of the ship, which would feature in multiple languages and include tailored musical and sound effects when appropriate.
Along with helping visitors to fully immerse into the ship’s rich maritime history, ATS Heritage was set the task of producing audio tours which added value to the admission price and maintained a high-level of visitor engagement, especially during busy periods.
To commence the project, ATS Heritage worked alongside Cutty Sark on the script and navigated through the tour to identify the focal points, which they could use to levitate the atmosphere of the overall audio experience.
As well as using ground-breaking software to design and deliver the full production of the audio tour, which they developed in 10 different languages – the audio experience specialists also continue to heavily collaborate with their in-house technical team to ensure the audio devices are in prime condition and reliable at all times.
After the careful concept design and delivery process, the Cutty Sark audio guides were rolled out to visitors in May 2019 – in which visitors were treated to an ITouch audio tour as part of their admission.
Amazing response from guests
Now a year and a half later, ATS Heritage are keen to share the overwhelming positive feedback they’ve had from guests since the launch. A statement from ATS Heritage said: “Most visitors now give Cutty Sark a 5-star or 4-star rating on TripAdvisor and Google reviews.
Adding: “What is particularly gratifying is that their reviews not only mention how much they have enjoyed the audio tour, but they also talk about the ship’s history, fire and conservation – all things they have discovered by taking the tour.”
Eleanor Harris, Director of Visitor Experience and Enterprises, who represents Cutty Sark is also delighted with the audio guides, expressing: “ATS Heritage was selected and we worked closely with them to develop an audio tour in 10 languages including an ‘Easy English’ option for all of the students who visit the ship who are learning English as a second language.
“Our curatorial and learning teams developed the scripts and ATS Heritage provided the languages, audio tour and handsets. We benefitted from ATS Heritage’s expertise in delivering a tour on a historic vessel.”
ATS Heritage encourages those with new or existing experiences who could benefit from an audio guide to get in touch to discuss potential opportunities.
