Winchester Science Centre set to launch £1.1 million multi-sensory exhibition

A UK leading science centre is set to reopen its doors this Saturday (October 17) with a brand-new visitor experience taking centre stage.

After almost a year and a half in the making, the Winchester Science Centre has transformed its entire top floor to feature a state-of-the-art immersive exhibition, experimentation zone and demonstration area, at a cost of £1.1 million.

The new innovative attraction has been launched to coincide with the International Year of Sound 2020. Through this, guests will endeavour on a multi-sensory journey which explores the origins of sounds, hearing, and vibration through a variety of engaging exhibits. A 10 metre playable guitar, an acoustic sonic rocket and a humungous ear are set to be centrepieces of the exhibition.

A 10 metre playable guitar will be a focal point of the attraction

Science LIVE will also feature at the new exhilarating experience, where visitors can watch and take part in thrilling large-scale experiments. The exhibition’s curators promise fire, ice and explosions which will take place regularly throughout the course of the day.

Smaller (and more chilled) zones will complete the attraction, including an innovative Recombobulation Room where guests can take some time out, as well as creative challenges based around nature and immersive table top attractions.

Experiments at Science LIVE will be showcased throughout the day

The top floor transformation is the biggest project by Winchester Science Centre since opening in 2002 and was made possible through a Biffa Award grant. As part of the process, world-renowned visitor experience designers Houghton Kneale Design Ltd and internationally acclaimed construction company The Moule Partnership were engaged to bring the exhibition visions to life.

Speaking of the new experience Ben Ward, Chief Executive of Winchester Science Centre said: “Sound is so important to our everyday lives and our aim is to showcase this in a fun, educational and accessible way.

“Our charity’s ambition is to make STEM (science technology, engineering and maths) accessible to everyone and we hope that we are one step closer to achieving this through our new visitor experience. It’s incredible to finally see our dream turned into a reality and we can’t wait to hear what our visitors think.”
