The UK is set to develop its first permanent mobile museum through a £1.6 million funding partnership between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and arts access charity Art Explora.
The investment includes £800,000 from DCMS, matched by £800,000 from Art Explora. The funding will support the creation of a dedicated museum vehicle designed by British architect Ab Rogers, with construction taking place in Telford by Torton Bodies Limited.
From next year, Art Explora will operate this novel museum through three annual 12-week exhibitions. One annual exhibition will feature works from the Government Art Collection, with further programming delivered alongside national and regional partners including the National Museums Liverpool, Birmingham Museums Trust, Leeds Art Gallery, and National Portrait Gallery.
A New Model For Touring Collections
The project creates a new platform for taking national collections into local settings, including schools, parks, libraries and public spaces.
For museums, galleries and cultural operators, the mobile museum offers a practical model for extending reach beyond fixed venues. It responds to long-standing challenges around geography, transport, economic access and cultural participation, particularly in areas with lower engagement in the arts.
The Government Art Collection, established in 1899, includes historic, modern and contemporary British art. Its works are usually displayed in government buildings in the UK and overseas, supporting public engagement and cultural diplomacy. The mobile museum will allow parts of the collection to be seen in a very different context, with a stronger focus on local access and learning.
Pilot Tour To Test The Format
Ahead of the permanent vehicle launch, the pilot three-month tour will happen across the North West and South West using an existing mobile museum.
The pilot exhibition, Shaped By The Sea, will run from 15 June to 13 September 2026 and will begin in St Budeaux, Plymouth. It will present works from the Government Art Collection exploring the sea’s relationship with people, places and communities, with themes including migration, exploration and climate change.
For sector professionals, the pilot provides an opportunity to test logistics, interpretation, audience response and partnership delivery before the permanent vehicle begins national touring in 2027.
Design, Access And Cultural Infrastructure
The permanent mobile museum has been designed by Ab Rogers, whose work often focuses on compact spaces, colour, movement and visitor experience. The vehicle itself is expected to act as both a touring gallery and a visible cultural presence in each location it visits.
Art Explora plans for the museum to tour for 36 to 40 weeks each year, visiting around 40 to 45 locations. The programme is expected to reach 25,000 visitors annually and work with 130 to 150 schools.
The initiative builds on Art Explora’s previous mobile museum tours with Tate in 2023 and 2024 across the Midlands and the North. It also aligns with wider government investment in cultural access, including the Arts Everywhere Fund and wider commitments to arts venues, museums, libraries and heritage buildings.
For the visitor experience sector, the project signals growing interest in mobile cultural infrastructure. It offers museums and public bodies a scalable approach to outreach, audience development and collection use, while giving designers and producers a compact format for high-quality interpretation outside conventional gallery settings.
