The Silverstone Experience: Educational, Innovative and Fun For All!

Silverstone has been associated with the realm of motor racing since halfway through the 20th century. Today, it is one of the most popular sporting venues the world over.

The ‘Silverstone Experience’ is meant to tell the whole story of Silverstone, from the very start, up until now.  Silverstone is far more than just a racing circuit. Its history was established far before the racing circuit as we know it today was even created.

It is this story that the Silverstone Experience wishes to tell. The story is one that cannot really be told. It can only be experienced, that too by visiting the place itself and witnessing first hand, the many layers of stories that are encapsulated within the present-day racing circuit.

The experiences takes the people visiting on a two-and-a-half hour exciting adventure, in celebration of everything that Silverstone represents. This journey takes into account the past events and the future of Silverstone into account.

The vision of this Silverstone Experience project was to educate visitors in fascinating and interactive ways of historic sporting rivalries, human courage, the engineering genius and unique heritage of Silverstone, and the British Motor Racing.

The project which was delivered by award winning designers Mather & Co makes use of interesting, modern imagery and film that will appeal to people of all ages and make for a uniquely fulfilling experience.

The Silverstone Experience is meant to be a collection of exhibition spaces, site tours, a research centre, a studio for learning and a whole range of fun-filled activities and programmes. The purpose of each of these is to spread the rich Silverstone heritage amongst as many visitors as possible.

The project is designed to entertain, to inform them about the current state of British motor sport, and to inspire visitors to become a part of the future of Silverstone.

The two-and-a-half hour ride is a thrilling journey, in which visitors are made to be at the very centre of the action. They learn about each of the engineering procedures that go behind the Silverstone racing circuit in an adventurous way.

Large-scale motorbikes and cars are animated using creative methods such as dramatic lighting, graphic backdrops and even AV projections.

Inside the technology lab, there are various fascinating and informative stations that allow visitors to discover all the many elements of motorbike and car design.

Other than learning about the various engineering and design elements, visitors, especially students, learn all about the different careers they can have in this field.

The Silverstone Experience is a unique, educational, fun-filled experience for the entire family. There are a series of massive AV displays for everyone in the family to have fun with altogether.

At the very beginning of the experience, visitors enter a grid where motorbikes and cars rush past them as the lights shut.

During the exhibition itself, participants can work in groups and teams to change the tyre of a racing car, and even train themselves to be a member of an RAF Wellington bomber crew.

The total budget for this project is £20, out of which, £9.1 million came from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
