In a groundbreaking initiative that stands to redefine the contours of adventure tourism, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has unveiled the Masterplan for THE RIG, an offshore platform in the Arabian Gulf that promises an unparalleled blend of thrills and leisure. This project aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives, aiming to significantly contribute to the burgeoning tourism sector, generate employment, and diversify the economy.
THE RIG. is poised to transform a once solely industrial marvel into a hotspot for adrenaline seekers and leisure lovers alike. Drawing inspiration from the architectural design of offshore oil platforms, the development honours Saudi Arabia’s storied oil and gas legacy. The sprawling expanse of over 300,000 square meters, situated 40km off the coast near Al Juraid Island and the Berri Oil Field, is set to beckon over 900,000 visitors annually by 2032.
This ambitious project will offer a diverse array of attractions, including three hotels with a total of 800 rooms, 11 gourmet restaurants, an extreme sports and adventure park, a state-of-the-art marina, and helipads. THE RIG. is designed to cater to a spectrum of visitors, from those seeking heart-pounding adventure to others desiring serene holidays and relaxation.
Visitors can anticipate engaging in a variety of water sports at the diving centre, as well as enjoying an amusement park, splash park, an E-sports arena, an immersive theatre, and a multipurpose arena. In celebrating the Kingdom’s rich heritage, THE RIG. will not merely be a destination but a transformative experience, setting it as a global must-visit locale.
The Oil Park Development Company (OPDC) will oversee the development of this innovative venture under the leadership of CEO Raed N. Bakhrji, whose extensive experience in the oil and gas sector and passion for adventure tourism are driving forces behind the project.
THE RIG. stands as a testimony to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to expanding its horizons, merging its historical foundations with a vision for an exhilarating future in tourism.
