Much like the rest of the world, India is fast catching up to the contemporary trends in the shopping mall business in its own way. Malls are no longer places that are primaraly for shopping and retail purposes, they need to offer something different to survive in the digital age.
The Indian Retail Landscape
Shopping centers still hold a significant place as retail hubs in the suburbs and lower tier cities across India. However, retail alone is not as big a reason to pull huge crowds to the malls as before, especially in the larger, tier 1 and tier 2 cities. Entertainment services and entertainment destinations are increasingly finding a lucrative partnership with the malls or retail businesses across these cities.
What’s Happening?
The increasing disposable incomes for the huge middle class, the rise of eCommerce along with an increasingly fast-paced lifestyle have together led to an increased demand for varied entertainment avenues and experience bases services, all under one convenient roof.
Movie theatres and shopping malls have been doing it for years but in keeping with the changing consumer trends, malls have started to transform into some kind of a “third space” – a community space besides the office and the home which can provide the new consumer with the best of entertainment, food, retail and a place to spend time with family and socialise with friends, all under one roof.
Malls are transforming into community spaces, bringing to the discerning consumer the best of brands, food, and entertainment. This new business model has come to be known as the FEC (Family Entertainment Centre).
