The booming trend of cemetery tourism

Every year trends in tourism change and make way for new visitor experiences. 2020 is no exception, as we begin to experience a growing market for cemetery attractions.

It may sound peculiar, but graveyards are not exclusively used as a place of mourning. Those with an interest in architecture, history and human life are flocking to the trail of tombstones for a day out.

One of the most popular cemeteries is Paris’ Pere Lachaise, which experienced 3.5 million visitors in 2019.

Demand for guided tours

London’s Highgate Cemetery does not advertise itself as an attraction but has seen a boost in visitor numbers in the last few years. Due to the demand, guided walking-tours are now offered as part of the experience.

The tours are hosted by expert guides, which are designed to spill secrets of the cemetery’s rich history, as well as navigating guests to the incredible statues, monuments and famous tombs dotted around the home for the dead.

Arguably the most influential resident at the 200-year-old graveyard is of German philosopher Karl Marx. Highgate Cemetery is also home to 300 war graves, with the majority being from the First World War.

Like many graveyards, Highgate Cemetery expect visitor numbers to continue to rise.

Remember your surroundings

They might be now seen as a tourist attraction, but it is important to remain courteous while visiting a cemetery. Respect the dead and those who maybe mourning by staying on the main track, keeping dogs on a lead and be mindful when taking photos.
