According to a recent report by the LA Times, a Sesame Street Theme Park will be making its way to San Diego in 2021.
According to the report, SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. has plans of converting its Aquatica waterslide venue, located in Chula Vista, into a new Sesame Place Theme Park that will bring to life everyone’s favourite childhood classic.
According to Marylin Hannes, the Park President of Sea World San Diego, the new Sesame Street Park will feature carousels and roller coasters, along with other family-friendly rides.
All popular Sesame Street characters will be at the park, along with parades and live shows.
The new park will cover an area of 17 acres, and the plan is to incorporate the existing water rides into the new park, particularly the children-friendly rides.
This Sesame Street Park is not the first of its kind. The original Sesame Place opened in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, back in 1980 and the new park is to be roughly mapped on this original one.
The original Sesame Park comprises of 18 land-based rides. These include Oscar’s Wacky Taxi Coaster and Elmo’s Cloud Chase.
SeaWorld entertainment Inc. previously opened the Sesame Street Bay of Play in 2008. There’s also the Sesame Street-themed amusement park in SeaWorld Orlando.
In fact, Sea World Orlando recently opened Sesame Street Land, which comprises of a parade, six rides, and much more.
This new park is not one-of-its kind, but it is the first new Sesame-themed park to open in 40 years and fans of the childhood favourite are excited.
The new Sesame Street Theme Park stems out of a necessity for SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. to uphold a long-running licensing agreement it had made with the Sesame Workshop, the organisation behind the popular children’s show.
The deal required that the company open a second Sesame Street amusement park in the US by the year 2021.
According to another report, the new Sesame Street Theme Park will feature 11 water attractions based on favourite characters and a 500,000-gallon pool. It will also include seven children-friendly rides.
According to SeaWorld Entertainment Inc, the new park will open as an autism centre, similar to the one in Pennsylvania.
According to Hannes:
“This rebranding is a significant investment for the company.”
Although Hannes refused to reveal the cost of the new project, The International Theme Park Services estimates that the cost would lie somewhere between $15 million and $20 million.
Aquatica will be open throughout the summer 2020. SeaWorld expects to do the Sesame theme park renovations during the offseason. The new Sesame Street theme park joins Lego land as the second major theme park targeted specifically at children.
