Popular Tokyo theme park closes after 94 years to make way for Harry Potter

A popular Tokyo theme park welcomed its last ever visitors on Monday, after entertaining guests of all ages for just short of 100 years.

Toshimaen, which opened in 1926, was one of Tokyo’s largest attractions. The park had more than 30 rides, including three rollercoasters and a waterpark with 25 slides.

Built in 1965, Toshimaen was also the first park in the world to have a river pool. The attraction allowed guests to leisurely glide down the 350-metre pool in a donut shaped rubber ring.

On August 31, the family-friendly theme park ceased operations. Most of the 22-hectare site, owned by Seibu Group, has been sold to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The government plans to build a public park, as well as an emergency shelter to be used in the event of disaster.

A new era for Tokyo attractions

Also moving onto the site, is a new Harry Potter attraction. The Making of Harry Potter, Warner Bros Studio Tour will only be the second of its kind in the world.

Fans of the iconic film series, written by J.K. Rowling, will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Wizarding World and all the magic which comes with it. Original props and costumes will be on display, famous sets including Diagon Alley and the Great Hall will be there to explore, as well as the opportunity to see how the film’s most spectacular special effects are brought to life.

Unlike the original Warner Bros Studio Tour in London, the Tokyo visitor experience will also feature exhibits and attractions based on Fantastic Beasts, the prequel to Harry Potter series.

The design and construction of the tour is a collaboration between Warner Bros, Seibu Railway, Fuyo General Lease and Itochu Corporation.  The Making of Harry Potter Tokyo is expected to open early 2023.
