Museum Store Sunday set to help thousands of museums recover from impacts of the pandemic

A major online shopping platform is holding a special event during Thanksgiving, which is set to help museum shops generated much needed income amid COVID 19.

Taking place in a few days time (November 29) Museum Store Sunday will give the public the chance to purchase an array of souvenirs, learning tools and access to virtual events from some of the world’s much-loved museums.

The impacts of COVID 19 has meant many of the nation’s visitor experiences are operating at a limited capacity to enforce social distancing, with some yet to reopen since March.

Museum Store Sunday will give both internationally established and smaller museums the platform to sell goods off-site, ultimately kick-starting their revenue and aiding their survival.

In the UK, the mighty Imperial War Museums has signed up to the opportunity – with 240 British museums taking part in the innovative last year.

The innovative, developed by Museum Store Association (MSA), has been greatly received in the museum sector, with 1600 guest experiences signing up to the offer so far. Proceeds will be directly deposited into the museum’s operational budget, when something new is bought.

Commenting ahead of Museum Store Sunday Laura Lott, president and CEO, American Alliance of Museums (AAM) said: “The vast majority of Alliance museums are also small non profit businesses who are counting on their communities for financial support in order to keep their doors open and their staff employed.

“While this holiday season looks different for everyone, there is a unique opportunity to shop locally at your community’s museum store or virtually around the world and discover the unique treasures that museums offer.”
