The Milwaukee Public Museum is embarking on a pivotal phase, with plans to start constructing its new downtown facility in the summer of 2024. The museum has successfully raised $80 million of the necessary $150 million in private contributions for this $240 million initiative.
The upcoming groundbreaking ceremony in May marks a significant milestone in the museum’s journey. This fundraising success reflects the community’s strong support, with substantial donations, including 34 gifts exceeding $1 million. The project is supported by $45 million from Milwaukee County and $40 million from state funds, with an additional $5 million in federal grants sought.
The museum aims to secure $108 million in private funds by the groundbreaking, focusing on large-scale donations. This strategy will transition to smaller contributions post-groundbreaking, targeting $130 million by the end of 2025 and reaching a total of $150 million by the end of 2026. The new museum, designed to be more efficient and address current maintenance challenges, will replace the building that opened in 1963.
The project’s budget includes construction costs, an endowment, and expenses related to relocating the museum’s extensive collections. This development represents a significant investment in the museum’s future, ensuring its continued role as a critical cultural and educational resource in Milwaukee.
Expanding on the museum’s future, the new Milwaukee Public Museum will serve as a beacon of cultural and historical preservation, reflecting both Milwaukee’s heritage and its contemporary dynamism. The redesigned facility aims to enhance the visitor experience with state-of-the-art exhibits, including a special nod to the beloved Streets of Old Milwaukee, evolving into a more immersive Milwaukee Revealed exhibit.
This transition illustrates a commitment to preserving history while embracing the future, ensuring the museum remains a cherished landmark in Milwaukee’s evolving cityscape.
