As the countdown to Expo 2025 Osaka begins, the Luxembourg Pavilion is setting a remarkable example of sustainable design and international cooperation. With just one year left until the opening on April 13, 2025, the preparations for Luxembourg’s showcase are in full swing, promising to deliver an impressive contribution to the Expo’s theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”
Designed by the Luxembourg architectural firm STDM, the Luxembourg Pavilion breaks new ground with its “circular by design” approach. This innovative strategy not only adheres to the principles of the circular economy but also ensures that parts of the structure can be reused post-Expo. The pavilion’s design features modular steel construction topped with a tensile membrane roof, embodying both flexibility and aesthetic appeal.
Construction of the pavilion, which began in February 2024 following a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, is being carried out by Japanese company Naito House. The work is progressing on schedule, with the interior design and scenographic content being developed in collaboration with the scenographers at jangled nerves.
A significant development in the project was the signing of a letter of intent with Katano City, which formalizes the city’s plan to reclaim part of the construction materials from the Luxembourg Pavilion after the Expo concludes. This partnership not only exemplifies the practical application of the circular economy but also aligns with the shared sustainability goals of Luxembourg and Japan, echoing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Furthermore, Luxembourg’s deep ties with Japan will be celebrated during the “Luxembourg Day” on May 30, 2025, at the Expo. This event will highlight the long-standing friendship between the two nations, featuring a program of cultural activities that are currently in the planning stages to ensure a rich and engaging experience.
Adding to the Pavilion’s momentum, Cargolux, a major freight carrier with a long history of operations in Japan, has joined as a key sponsor. This partnership underscores the strong economic connections between Luxembourg and Japan and enhances the Pavilion’s capacity to showcase Luxembourg’s contributions to global discussions on future societies.
In preparation for the Expo, the Luxembourg Pavilion has also issued calls for applications for staff, volunteers, and innovative furniture designs. These initiatives aim to involve the Luxembourgish community and promote local design talents, further showcasing the nation’s commitment to creativity and sustainability.
The Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is set to be a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and cultural exchange. With its thoughtful design and strategic partnerships, it exemplifies how global exhibitions can serve as platforms for showcasing pioneering ideas and fostering international cooperation.
Visitors to the Expo can look forward to experiencing “Doki Doki – The Luxembourg Heartbeat,” a concept that captures the excitement and joy of connecting lives across cultures. Positioned under the sub-theme “Connecting Lives,” the Pavilion will offer a unique space where visitors can explore the connections between Luxembourg and the global community, particularly Japan.
As Luxembourg continues to prepare for this significant event, the Pavilion is poised to not only represent the country’s technological and ecological advances but also its cultural vibrancy and commitment to global sustainability.
