London’s Winter Wonderland 2020 cancelled due to COVID-19

One of Europe’s largest Christmas markets has been cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.

Organisers of Winter Wonderland have said that it is with a ‘heavy heart’ that they have no choice but to cancel the two-month extravaganza, which was due to start in November this year. The officials have suggested that the scale of the event and ongoing health concerns amid the pandemic made it impossible for the event to go ahead.

It is hoped the event, which attracts 2.5 million visitors a year, will return in Winter 2021.

About the Wonderland

Since opening in 2007, Winter Wonderland has soon become the face of London’s Christmas scene. Based in the iconic Hyde Park, the magical Christmas Event boasts an enticing array of festive fun for all ages to enjoy. As well as scrumptious food huts and ample of German beer (which you would expect from a Christmas market) the Wonderland also features the following attractions:

  • A 60 metre Ferris wheel
  • The UK’s largest temporary ice rink
  • Ice sculpture kingdom
  • The world’s largest portable rollercoaster, featuring five vertical loops
  • 70 metre star flyer ride, taking guests on a journey to the North Pole Winter Wonderland will be heavily missed by Londoners and tourists to the capital city this Christmas.

Commenting on the closure, Winter Wonderland officials said: “We know how disappointing this news will be for the millions of people we usually welcome each season. And we can assure you we share your disappointment, having put a lot of work, sweat and even some tears into trying to make this year’s event possible.

“Thank you so much for your ongoing support and please stay safe. We cannot wait to bring friends and family back together to celebrate the festive season at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in 2021.”

Elsewhere, a 94 year old theme park has closed to make way for a new Harry Potter studio tour.
