Leeds Castle, famously known as the “Loveliest Castle in the World,” is taking a bold step forward in reimagining historical storytelling by blending cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) with its rich medieval past. Beginning in 2025, visitors will experience a first-of-its-kind interactive attraction: a life-sized AI version of Queen Eleanor of Castile, the castle’s first female owner and wife of King Edward I. This innovative project is part of the castle’s three-year “Moments in Time” program and will be a centerpiece of the upcoming “Pilgrimage of Love: Eleanor of Castile and Edward I.”
Created in collaboration with SKC Games Studio, the AI Queen Eleanor will be the highlight of a truly immersive experience that enables visitors to converse with a digital recreation of the medieval queen. This interaction will take place in the three languages Queen Eleanor likely spoke—Spanish, English, and French—allowing guests to delve into her personal life, passions, and legacy. As a patron of the arts and an influential queen, Eleanor’s story will be told in a way that transcends traditional museum exhibits, making history come alive in an unprecedented manner.
Sue Prichard, Head Curator at Leeds Castle, expressed her excitement about the AI experience, highlighting Queen Eleanor’s influential role in shaping the castle and her love of medieval romance and Arthurian legend. This attraction, developed using SKC Games Studio’s AI platform, 1956 Individuals, is designed to deepen visitor engagement, offering a deeply personal and accessible way to learn about Queen Eleanor’s life and her contributions to English culture.
The visitor experience industry is no stranger to innovations that enhance engagement, but the AI Queen Eleanor project marks a significant leap forward. It brings together historical research, AI technology, and digital character design to create a dynamic, real-time interaction. Babita Devi, Chief Strategy Officer of SKC Games Studio, sees this as a new frontier in AI-driven cultural experiences, where history is not just told but interacted with.
For Leeds Castle, a destination that has long drawn visitors for its historical significance and scenic beauty, the AI Queen Eleanor project is an opportunity to merge past and present. By embracing advanced technology, the castle is enhancing its role as a leader in heritage preservation while offering guests a truly unique, futuristic encounter. As Prichard mentioned, Eleanor’s story, while deeply rooted in the 13th century, will resonate with modern audiences, providing a bridge between historical events and contemporary relevance.
Beyond its cultural significance, the AI Queen Eleanor project exemplifies how AI can revolutionize visitor experiences. Through lifelike conversations with Queen Eleanor, visitors will not only gain knowledge about her life but also feel a personal connection, an approach that could change how historical sites engage with the public.
This initiative is yet another example of how AI is reshaping the visitor experience industry, offering immersive and educational interactions that are both entertaining and informative. Leeds Castle’s AI Queen Eleanor of Castile promises to set a new standard for how technology can be used to celebrate history, making it more accessible, engaging, and relevant than ever before.
