Humber Polytechnic and SimStaff Accelerate Esports Innovation with SimStaff Velocity Lab

Humber Polytechnic is setting a new benchmark in esports education and game design through its partnership with UK-based SimStaff. The launch of the SimStaff Velocity Lab introduces cutting-edge racing simulation technology to Humber’s Toronto campus, cementing the institution as a leader in academic innovation within the rapidly evolving esports and gaming sectors.

Equipped with Formula-standard racing simulators, the SimStaff Velocity Lab bridges the gap between theoretical learning and industry application. Students from Humber Esports and the Faculty of Media, Creative Arts, and Design now have access to the same tools used by motorsport professionals, preparing them for dynamic careers in esports, game development, and simulation research.

Revolutionising Esports Education in Canada
Humber’s collaboration with SimStaff reflects a groundbreaking approach to esports education, combining high-performance technology with academic rigor. Bernard Mafei, Senior Administrator for Humber Esports, highlights the significance of this initiative: “At Humber Esports, we’re shaping the future of esports education and innovation. By blending hands-on experiences in sim racing with opportunities in esports, game development, research, and industry partnerships, we’re preparing our students to excel in a rapidly evolving global landscape.”

The Velocity Lab offers unique opportunities for Humber students, including:

  • Competitive Sim Racing: Student drivers and coaches will participate in major events such as the eNASCAR College iRacing Series and the Formula 1 Exhibition.
  • Game Design and Animation: Faculty and students will create a custom racetrack inspired by Humber’s campus, honing skills in digital scanning, spatial computing, and race mechanics.
  • Simulation Research: Research teams will explore AR, VR, and haptic technologies, furthering innovation in simulation and gaming.
  • Industry Experience: Co-op placements with SimStaff and mentorship from motorsport and game development professionals provide students with real-world exposure.

Driving Towards Excellence
This initiative is a cornerstone of Humber’s vision, Building Brilliance, which prioritises academic and industry collaboration to prepare students for success in competitive fields. Ann Marie Vaughan, President and CEO of Humber Polytechnic, emphasises the importance of such partnerships:
“Our partnership with SimStaff enhances this vision. By integrating esports, game design, and industry-leading simulation tools, we are empowering the next generation of talent to excel on both virtual and real-world racetracks.”

Over the next two years, the SimStaff Velocity Lab will solidify Humber Polytechnic’s position as a trailblazer in esports, game design, and technical education. For students, it offers a launchpad to careers at the intersection of gaming, motorsport, and advanced manufacturing.
