Houston Zoo expansion launches exotic South America habitat

With COVID-19 hindering international travel there has never been a worst time to go abroad, however a popular US zoo is bringing the tropical wetlands of South America to its animal park this October.

Houston Zoo is due to launch South America’s Pantanal which will immerse guests into the lives of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia’s most exotic species.

Spread across 4.2 acres, visitors are expected to see jaguars, monkeys, giant river otters, birds and tapirs to name a few.

Unlike many zoos around the world, the new development will give guests the chance to see how animals interact with different species as they would in the wild.

Monkeys are expected to dominate the new attraction’s soundscape, who have a number of chirps to communicate how they’re feeling.

The new development will also be home to the world’s heaviest snake, the anaconda, which is expected to look out for pray in the new forest habitat.

Curators of the incredible project have worked hard to ensure the experience spectacularly replicates South America’s Pantanal, which is the continent’s biggest concentration of wildlife, featuring forests, rivers and marshlands.

The main attraction will be a large otter river which includes waters of 100 feet deep. With just 10 centimetres of glass separating the guests and the habitat, visitors will be able to engage with the joyful mammals, both above and below the waters.

Houston Zoo Partners has collaborated with conservation groups Lowland Tapir Conservation, Projet Tatu-Canastra, Bandeira Rodovias and Projeto Ariranha to bring the spectacular project to life.
