Helmingham Estate To Launch Guildenacre Woodland Adventure Designed By CAP.CO

This summer, we will open Guildenacre, a new four-acre woodland adventure playground set within the grounds of Helmingham Estate in Suffolk. Designed and delivered in partnership with CAP.CO (Creating Adventurous Places) is a significant investment in immersive, nature-led play as part of our long-term visitor experience strategy.

Guildenacre has been conceived as a story-driven environment rooted in the estate’s character. Located within existing woodland, the playground is structured around four themed zones, each linked to a guardian animal and its habitat. The narrative thread is anchored by the Whispering Oak Tree, which connects the areas through a cohesive storyline.

Designing For Narrative And Nature

Working with CAP.CO, we set out to create a play environment that feels embedded within its setting rather than imposed upon it. The four zones have been carefully positioned within the woodland to work with natural topography and tree cover.

Flint’s Hollow, themed around a badger, introduces burrows, tunnels and elevated lookout points, culminating in a covered slide that returns visitors to ground level. Eira the Owl’s Canopy Keep sits higher within the trees, accessed via timber walkways and rope climbs, and incorporates interactive elements such as talking tubes.

Elderglade, the largest structure, centres on Atlas the Stag and includes climbing walls, multi-level walkways, bridges and multiple slides. Vex the Vixen’s Ember Den incorporates zip lines, balance trails and ground-level play features designed to encourage older children to test coordination and confidence.

In addition to the physical play elements, we have integrated an educational layer through themed trail sheets and stamp stations, encouraging exploration and observation across the site.

Accessibility And Supporting Infrastructure

A key objective has been to ensure Guildenacre is inclusive and easy to navigate. All four areas are connected by bark pathways designed to accommodate pushchairs and wheelchairs. A dedicated den-building zone provides flexible, imaginative play, allowing children to construct their own temporary shelters.

Supporting infrastructure includes toilets and refreshment provision within the woodland setting. At the estate entrance, modest retail and catering facilities will be introduced at the Grade II listed Wades Barn, which will serve as the gateway to Guildenacre.

A separate car park is also being developed to support increased visitor numbers and manage circulation across the wider estate.

Environmental Stewardship And Estate Integration

As custodians of Helmingham, it has been essential that the building process respects the ecological value of the woodland. Construction is being managed to minimise disruption to habitats and protect ancient trees. Where possible, estate-sourced materials are being used, and the wood-led design language has been selected to complement the surrounding landscape.

Guildenacre is intended to sit alongside our existing offer, which includes Grade I-listed gardens, a 400-acre deer park, independent shops, and seasonal events. The playground adds a new dimension to the estate, broadening appeal to family audiences while maintaining alignment with our heritage and landscape values.

Expanding The Visitor Experience

The introduction of Guildenacre reflects our wider ambition to deepen dwell time and diversify the on-site experience. By combining narrative design, physical challenge and educational content, the project strengthens Helmingham’s position within the regional visitor economy.

With construction continuing into early 2026 ahead of a summer opening, Guildenacre represents a new chapter for the estate. We look forward to welcoming visitors into a woodland environment that balances adventure, storytelling and environmental responsibility.
