Harry Potter Theme Park to Open in Tokyo

Entertainment giant Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc, plans on opening a Harry Potter theme park by the end of spring 2023 in Tokyo, Japan. The park will replace the Toshimaen Amusement Park in the Nerima ward in Tokyo. A 20-hectare plot owned by Seibu Group will be leased to Warner Bros, and the rest of the land will be bought by the Tokyo Metropolitan government to develop a park. Negotiations between Warner Bros., the Tokyo metropolitan government, and the Seibu Group are underway, and the decision will be officially announced this spring.

The content of the theme park will be inspired by the film studio in London, where people can tour the studio sets where the Harry Potter movie was filmed. The Great Hall of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the shopping street of Diagon Alley, and the Platform of the Hogwarts Express Locomotive are all such facilities that are not present in the Harry Potter-themed attractions at Universal Studios in the United States and Universal Studios Japan.

Toshimaen was launched in 1926 and hailed as a leading amusement park in central Tokyo. It includes swimming pools, hot spa facilities, and several amusement facilities. It is a 350-meter doughnut-shaped area with the world’s first river pool. After the unfortunate earthquake occurred in Japan in 2011, the Tokyo metropolitan government decided to develop a massive park as a disaster-prevention measure. The government offered to buy the land from the Seibu Group, due to the stagnation of the negotiations, and no outcome was reached. Warner Bros. decided to join the negotiations with a proposal for building a Harry Potter-themed park, which got all three parties talking again.

The Harry Potter series of books is written by British author J.K Rowling, and it follows the adventures of a pre-teen wizard and his two friends Ron and Hermione while studying at the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The first novel was published in 1997 and was translated and introduced to Japanese readers in 1999. Ever since the story became a global hit, fans all across the globe were ecstatic when Warner Bros. made a screen version of the story in 2001. The Harry Potter series of books and movies have been completed, resulting in 7 books and 8 films.

Universal Studio Japan launched ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ in 2014, with 14.3 million visitors per year, while the annual number of visitors to Toshimaen dropped to 1.12 million after peaking at 3.9 million in 1992. Warner Bros. and the Tokyo Metropolitan government are expecting a great turn-out after the opening of the Harry Potter-themed Park in the spring of 2023.  Universal Studio Japan is fairly popular amongst the locals as well as the foreigners and acts as a centrepiece of sightseeing tours in the Kansai region in Osaka, Japan.

Tokyo Government Yuriko Koike told the reporters regarding the Toshimaen facility, “We’ll make good use of it.” Toshimaen had been a designated evacuation area for quite some time in addition to being an amusement facility.
