Experience Oxfordshire Launches New Walking Tour Beyond Oxford’s Famous Skyline

This summer, Experience Oxfordshire is adding a new route to Oxford Official Walking Tours with the launch of Oxford Beyond The Dreaming Spires Walking Tour.

Launching on Monday 3 August, the tour has been designed to take visitors and residents beyond Oxford’s most familiar landmarks and into areas that reveal a different side of the city. While Oxford is internationally recognised for its colleges, historic skyline and academic heritage, the new tour focuses on neighbourhoods, public spaces, waterside routes and local stories that are often missed on shorter city visits.

As the operator of Oxford Official Walking Tours, we developed the new route to complement our popular Oxford University & City Walking Tour. It gives guests a broader understanding of Oxford life, connecting the city’s academic identity with the communities, streets and spaces that continue to shape it today.

Exploring Jericho And North Oxford

Oxford Beyond The Dreaming Spires begins north of the city centre, moving into Jericho, an area known for its characterful streets and links to Oxford’s historic bookbinding trade. The route also introduces the wider North Oxford setting, including nearby Summertown, where academic, cultural and social life continues to play an important role in the city.

These areas provide a strong setting for a walking tour because they connect Oxford’s working history, university heritage, independent businesses and residential character. For visitors, the route offers context beyond the city’s best-known views. For residents, it provides an opportunity to see familiar streets through new stories and interpretation.

The tour also includes the redeveloped Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, where public spaces and contemporary university use sit alongside historic architecture. This part of the route demonstrates how Oxford continues to adapt while retaining a clear connection to its past.

A Route Shaped By Stories And Place

The two-hour tour includes waterside paths, the natural setting of University Parks and neighbourhoods known for independent cafés, historic pubs, restaurants and local meeting places.

These elements help present Oxford as a lived-in city as well as a world-famous destination. The tour introduces places associated with generations of scholars, writers, scientists, artists and entrepreneurs, giving guests a richer sense of the people and ideas that have shaped Oxford beyond its most photographed sites.

For Experience Oxfordshire, this is an important part of responsible destination development. Walking tours can help distribute visitors across a wider area, support local businesses and encourage a fuller understanding of a place. They also provide a low-impact way to connect culture, heritage, neighbourhood identity and local storytelling.

Supporting Public And Private Group Demand

Oxford Beyond The Dreaming Spires Walking Tour will initially run on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00. Public tours are limited to a maximum of 20 people per group, supporting a high-quality guided experience and allowing guests to engage more closely with the route and guide.

The tour is also available for private bookings, subject to guide availability. This makes it suitable for family groups, corporate groups and tailored itineraries, with the Oxford Official Walking Tours team able to adapt content to specific interests.

All Oxford Official Walking Tours can be booked online, with gift cards also available for those looking to give a guided walking experience.

For Experience Oxfordshire, the launch of Oxford Beyond The Dreaming Spires reflects our continued commitment to presenting Oxford in a way that is informed, accessible and connected to the wider county visitor economy. By offering a route that looks beyond the most familiar landmarks, we are helping guests discover a fuller, richer and more locally grounded view of the city.
