Escape Hunt Plans First Welsh Venue At St David’s Cardiff

Escape Hunt has announced plans to open its first Welsh venue at St David’s Cardiff, adding a new interactive entertainment attraction to one of the city’s key retail and leisure destinations.

The planned Cardiff site will feature seven themed escape rooms and three outdoor City Hunt experiences, extending the brand’s UK presence with a permanent location in Wales. An opening date is due to be confirmed later this year, with further launch details expected in the coming months.

For retail landlords, leisure operators and city-centre destination teams, the move reflects the continued demand for experience-led attractions within shopping centres. Escape rooms and puzzle-based entertainment can help diversify tenant mix, support group visits and bring additional dwell time into retail environments.

The St David’s Cardiff location also gives Escape Hunt a central trading position, allowing the brand to connect indoor entertainment with surrounding city activity through its outdoor game formats.

Indoor Escape Rooms Support Group-Based Entertainment

The venue will include seven escape room experiences built around themed story worlds, puzzles and timed team challenges. Announced titles include Curse of the Pharaoh, Aladdin and the Magic Vault and Dracula.

Each room is designed around cooperative play, with teams required to search for clues, solve puzzles and complete tasks within a set time. This model has become a proven format in location-based entertainment because it combines storytelling, social participation and repeatable operations within a compact built environment.

From a business perspective, escape rooms offer several advantages for shopping centres and mixed-use destinations. They can operate from contained units, support advance booking, attract corporate groups and provide weatherproof leisure activity across the week. The format also lends itself to private hire, celebrations and team-building bookings, creating commercial value beyond standard walk-in leisure trade.

Escape Hunt’s Cardiff venue will broaden the city’s interactive entertainment offer while giving the operator a foothold in a new regional market.

Outdoor City Hunts Extend The Operating Footprint

Alongside the indoor rooms, the Cardiff venue will offer three outdoor City Hunt experiences. These include Vampire Hunters, Time Cops and Return to Wonderland.

The outdoor format combines puzzle-solving with city exploration, allowing the operator to extend the experience beyond its physical unit. For venues located in central retail districts, this hybrid model can create useful connections between a fixed attraction and the wider urban environment.

For operators, outdoor games can also add flexibility to capacity planning. They allow additional bookings without relying solely on room availability, while offering a different product for groups that prefer a longer, route-based format. For city-centre partners, these games can encourage movement through nearby streets and support links with local hospitality, retail and cultural assets.

This combination of indoor and outdoor activity gives Escape Hunt Cardiff a broader operating base than a conventional escape room site alone.

Relevance For Retail And Leisure Placemaking

Escape Hunt’s entry into Wales points to the sustained role of competitive socialising within retail-led destinations. Shopping centres are increasingly seeking tenants that provide social activity, pre-booked entertainment and group appeal, particularly as retail property owners work to strengthen the role of leisure within their estates.

The Cardiff venue also highlights the value of branded, story-led formats that can serve multiple markets from one location. Families, work groups, celebrations and organised team-building all require different sales routes, but puzzle-based attractions can serve these audiences through the same operational framework.

Escape Hunt’s leadership has described the Welsh launch as an important step for the company, with Cardiff selected as the brand’s first permanent site in the country. Once open, the venue will add a new layer of interactive entertainment to St David’s Cardiff and provide another example of how shopping centres are using leisure attractions to widen their purpose and increase visitor engagement.
