Disney’s Hollywood Studios Reimagines Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster With The Muppets

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is preparing to reopen Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster with a new Muppets-led identity, bringing The Electric Mayhem into one of the park’s established thrill ride formats. From 26 May, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will place guests inside a new music-driven storyline centred on Dr. Teeth, Animal, Floyd, Janice, Zoot and Lips.

The update gives Disney a way to refresh a high-capacity coaster while retaining the attraction’s core ride system and rock concert premise. For theme park operators and attraction designers, the project is a useful example of how a familiar ride can be renewed through character IP, pre-show technology, environmental design and post-ride retail.

G-Force Records Becomes A Muppets Stage

The attraction’s story begins at G-Force Records, now presented as a Hollywood recording studio under new management. The Electric Mayhem are due to headline a major concert, but the band has not yet reached the venue. This gives the attraction a clear narrative hook, with guests joining a VIP-style journey that moves from studio rehearsal to high-speed transport across town.

The exterior courtyard will also receive a new visual identity. The attraction’s recognisable guitar marquee is being redesigned with a psychedelic treatment inspired by The Electric Mayhem’s vehicle, while a piano motif at the base introduces a further character reference.

Inside the queue, posters and set dressing will build the band’s career history and create photo-friendly moments. Celebrity cameos, including “Weird Al” Yankovic, Wayne Brady, Yvette Nicole Brown, Travis Barker, Neil Patrick Harris, John Stamos, Darren Criss, Danny Trejo and Awkwafina, will be woven through the experience and merchandise area.

Animatronics And Music-Led Storytelling

A major technical addition is the first Audio-Animatronics figure of Scooter, developed using motion-capture performance. By tracking the movement of the actual Muppet, Walt Disney Imagineering has created a figure designed to reflect Scooter’s mannerisms, expression and physical timing.

In the pre-show, Scooter works alongside penguin audio engineers while trying to move The Electric Mayhem from rehearsal to the concert. This gives the attraction a stronger character-led setup before guests board the Lengthy Immediate Motion Object, or L.I.M.O., a Muppet Labs-inspired transport concept that connects the existing coaster launch to the new story.

Music remains central to the attraction. The set list includes The Electric Mayhem versions of Song 2, Born To Be Wild, Love Rollercoaster, Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop) and Walking On Sunshine, with featured artists including Kelly Clarkson, Def Leppard, Questlove, Jennifer Hudson and Camilla the Chicken. This gives the ride multiple audio profiles, supporting repeatability and adding variation to the guest experience.

Retail, Food And Area Activation

The retheme extends beyond the ride itself. Disney PhotoPass will offer concert-inspired attraction photos, while Rock Around the Shop will carry a new merchandise range linked to the updated attraction.

Nearby food and beverage location FØØD by Swedish Chef is also receiving a refreshed look and updated menu, positioning the wider courtyard as part of the attraction offer. This area-based approach is commercially significant, as it expands the value of the retheme into retail, dining and social content.

For the attractions sector, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets shows how operators can rework established assets through IP integration, new pre-show media, character technology and connected spending opportunities, while maintaining the operational strength of a proven ride platform.
