Disney Temporarily Closing EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth for Major Upgrade

EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth, this iconic ride at the Walt Disney World Resort, is getting a major upgrade.

The announcement was first made at D23 Expo held last year, where they talked about the New Epcot Lands with new attractions and refurbishment of the previous ones. As the Chairman of the Disney Parks, Bob Chapek said, this transformation would make the parks “more Disney, more family, more timeless, and more relevant.”

On 25th February, Disney announced on their blog post that the EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth would shut down on May 26th for reimagining, saying, “Spaceship Earth in its current form will close for a time starting that day.” It isn’t mentioned how long it will remain closed, but assumptions are that it would take at least 2 years or maybe even 3 before the park reopens for the public.

Fans who want to experience the park in its current form one last time have about 3 month’s time to visit the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake Florida. After that, fans of EPCOT will have to wait for an indefinite amount of time before the attraction reopens, which could last up to a few years.

Although much isn’t said about what changes and what new innovations we can expect from the renovations, this new attraction appears to have been named Spaceship Earth: Our Shared Story. “The next iteration of Spaceship Earth will focus on the story of humanity, following our long journey from prehistoric humans to today brought to life with magic and depth that only Disney can deliver,” a spokesperson revealed.

They also added that a lot of the already loved moments will get a new spin on them, merged with new scenes and imagery to create a story about our collective human experience This ride that takes its participants on a time travel journey to explore how the human communications has developed from the Stone Age to the current computer age, will now receive a new narration that will make you understand how “light plays a central role in our shared human history.”

Disney has shared a concept image that previews how the Egypt part of this attraction will look after the refurbishment. Although Egypt has been a part of this journey before, after being transformed by the power of light, it is expected to be seen like never before.

This is the fourth time this attraction is being updated since its grand opening on the 1st of October, 1982. It also seems to be the most ambitious one by far.

It was once said by Walt Disney that EPCOT would always be in a state of becoming, and his vision is surely being proven right.
