The highly anticipated design of a new USA $60 million children’s museum has been revealed.
Lead designers Snøhetta has unveiled a light, spacious and playful children’s museum in the heart of the Texas. The architecture resembles floating clouds which explores the theme that everyone should aim for the sky and establishes a tranquil atmosphere before guests venture into the centre.
Once inside, the 70,000 square feet museum features five floors and balconies, comprising of plenty of space for children to endeavour on immersive, fun and innovative activities, as well as plenty of opportunity for adults to enjoy the incredible architecture on offer and viewpoints of Texas city’s landscape.
Design for El Paso’s interior
The first floor is set to be open planned and will include free exhibitions, a café and a 60-foot atrium, where guests will be able to enjoy spectacular views of a climbing structure centrepiece, which is set to reach the fourth floor.
The design has also unveiled an abundance of windows and lookout points, where grownups will be able to take some timeout and absorb panoramic views of the Franklin Mountains and Sierra de Juarez Mountains while their children play.
As Texas enjoys an average of 300 sunny days per year, ample of outdoor space for experiences has been considered as part of the design process. Street scapes, gathering areas and gardens which will feature vibrant plans and natural boulders will feature at the museum’s exterior, with the design heavily inspired by the idyllics of the Chihuahuan desert.
The eastern side of the building is set to be reserved for a terraced discovery garden, which will boast a series of outdoor zones each immersing guests into a variation of themes. A cooling mist playground with low-flow sprinkles will also be housed at the museum.
El Paso Children’s Museum is the latest major project undertaken by internationally acclaimed designers Snøhetta, who have more than 30 years experience designing and delivering some of the world’s most cultural buildings. Projects completed in their successful portfolio include the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Expansion in California.
