£5 Million Awarded to the Highlands and Island Projects

Last month, Fiona Hyslop, the secretary for Scottish Tourism and Culture, announced a £5 million ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) award for 9 projects in the Highlands and Islands. These funds will be used to promote the wildlife, culture and natural beauty of the area so that tourists can enjoy a memorable experience. Led by the Scottish Natural Heritage, the funds have been awarded through the Natural Cultural and Heritage Fund (NCHF).

Ms. Hyslop was pleased to announce the grants from NCHF to the successful applicants. She said that these shared funds would help offer both economical and social benefits, which will have a ripple effect across local communities. Not only will it help tourism to flourish but also create job opportunities for the locals.

She said, “‘This fund will create jobs and help projects in remote areas to enhance their offer to the millions of people who visit the region every year.” In addition to this, she also thanked the European Regional Development Fund, for their support.

The projects that will be funded are:

West Highland College UHI

This project has been assigned £350,371. It will develop an app, website and programme of digital exhibitions along Scotland’s west coast. It will share the fascinating stories of coastal communities conveying how maritime, cultural and natural heritage have shaped the world, thereby inspiring tourists to visit the Islands.

Lews Castle College UHI, UVAP

Allocated with £271,000 funds, this project will develop a series of amplified reality experiences, along with mixed media exhibitions for the 7 archaeological sites located along the walking route of the Hebridean Way.

NW Mull Community Woodland Company—Ulva Cultural Heritage Project

The fund allocation for this project is £813,000. The Ulva House located here will be refurbished and conserved for visitors to explore. On the other hand, a research project with the University of the Highlands and Islands will carry an in-depth investigation to learn about Ulva’s people and how they impact the world. They will also develop a website, create a self-catering flat and with the help of volunteers restore Ulva House Garden.

Kilmartin Museum Company Ltd

Assigned £700,000, this project will focus on the renovation of Kilmartin Museum, transforming it into a learning centre and stunning attraction for visitors. Other areas that will be improved include a remodelled shop, an overflow car park and digital interpretation.

National Trust Scotland near Ullapool

National Trust Scotland will be funded with £923,000. These funds will be used to form a new visitor centre providing a gateway to Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach. It will improve and expand the car park area and develop new path networks with signage and wayfinding.
