£44 Million RHS Garden Bridgewater opening Spring 2021

A world leading green-space charity is in the process of creating the largest garden in Europe.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is currently creating RHS Garden Bridgewater, which will bring 154 acres of breath-taking greenery to Salford, Greater Manchester.

Designs have been unveiled which showcase the plans for several spacious zones, including a Wellbeing Garden, a Paradise Garden, Learning Garden and a Kitchen Garden. Along with a new Welcome Building, which will include events spaces, a café, gift shop and learning zones.

Full planning permission was granted for the site just over three years ago, with the first phase including the ambitious transformation of the Weston Walled Garden.

The project is RHS’ first new garden project in almost 20 years and will be housed on the grounds of Worsley New Hall, a former Victorian mansion which lay within spectacular gardens.

The residence has since been demolished, but RHS say ‘echoes of the original gardens, including the historic walled garden, ice-house, lake and formal terraces can still be seen.’

RHS is now collaborating with the site’s estate owners Peel L&P and Salford City Council to bring the bespoke visions to life, with the charity still needing to raise £4 million to create the new facilities.

RHS Garden Bridgewater is set to be a great investment into the region’s finances and is expected to boost Greater Manchester’s local economy by just short of £14 million by 2029.

In addition, it will also create 140 garden-based jobs and will provide plenty of opportunities for apprenticeships and local schemes, to help the community become more green-fingered and learn an abundance of new skills.

RHS Garden Bridgewater is set to open May 2021.

Elsewhere, the National Trust’s spectacular gardens are staying open through England’s second national lockdown.
