$11 Million Aquatic Facility Planned for Morton Grove, Illinois

In this uncertain period, many public suburban pools throughout the US have closed for good. Morton Grove Park District Officials, however, are looking ahead to the construction of a brand new aquatic facility. Designs for the $11 million redevelopment were approved by the park board on May 20th.

The new designs, from Williams Architects, show a six-lane, Olympic size swimming pool, a plunge pool with two water slides, a diving pool, and a wading pool with separate splash pad features. A new bathhouse is to be constructed, including locker room facilities, concessions and an indoor party room. Additionally, residents will have the option to rent out private cabanas, which will be an added source of income for the park district.

Tom LaLonde of Williams Architects said “The goal is to get the facility open for next year’s swim season,” acknowledging that the schedule is an “aggressive” one. The plans were presented during a virtual meeting of the board.

The existing Harrer pool has stood since 1962, with its last renovation taking place in 1995. Since closing last year, park officials began planning for the construction of the new outdoor pools, and voters in March approved a property tax increase to partially fund the $11 million investment.

The board’s approval for the new Harrer pool designs on May 20 came just before the board voted to cancel all indoor programs and close Oriole Park pool for the summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other local district pools are considering a possible reopening if the area advances to phase four of the governor’s plan to restore Illinois.
